The scary part is I don’t think the deaths are an intended side effect. It’s counter-intuitive, but killing individuals doesn’t help much with controlling population numbers. That requires messing with either reproduction or food production. e.g., passenger pigeons went extinct due to clear-cutting their breeding grounds, not from hunting.
Recently male GMO mosquitos were released in FL to control the mosquito population. GMO males would mate, and the female offspring would be infertile, while the male offspring would carry that same gene.

If those in charge wanted to reduce the number of humans long-term, they wouldn’t kill a tiny fraction of a percent of us, they’d do something like what they did to the mosquitos.
